4 Common Summer AC Problems

Due to increasing seasonal temperatures, air conditioners tend to do the most work during the summertime. Unfortunately, the extra strain may be too much for your air conditioner, and it may break down at the most inopportune moment. When this occurs, you need to call an HVAC contractor in Sonoma and Marin County for either a repair or replacement of your air conditioner. Here are some common problems to look out for as this summer fast approaches.

1. Clogged HVAC Air Filter

How often you need to change or clean your HVAC air filter depends on the type you have. There should be instructions on the filter that explain how often it needs to be changed or cleaned. However, you should take care of your HVAC air filter often so it doesn't become too clogged up. This prevents your air conditioner from operating efficiently, and it may break down as a result. Not only that, but a dirty filter can send particles of dust and dirt circulating back through the house, and indoor air quality may suffer as a result. Changing or cleaning the air filter is a task you can perform yourself and helps to prevent any further need for air conditioner repair.

2. No Air or Warm Air

If your AC isn't producing any air at all, or it starts blowing warm air, you will probably become aware of it right away. One reason why this can happen is that the unit's evaporator coils have frozen, which can occur when they don't have enough warm air blowing over them. Other reasons why your AC may start blowing warm air include problems such as compressor damage. These are serious problems that require professional attention.

3. Frequent Cycling

Cycling refers to the process by which the air conditioner automatically turns on when it gets too warm and then shuts back off again when cooled to the level set on the thermostat. While it varies somewhat based on the temperature, your air conditioner should run for 15 to 20 minutes at a time and cycle three to four times per hour. If you notice it cycling on and off more often, it could mean dirty evaporator coils or another serious problem.

4. Leaking Refrigerant

The refrigerant is a fluid contained inside the air conditioner that causes the air to cool. A leak not only causes your air conditioner to stop working, but it could also put you at risk for medical problems. If your air conditioner is older, it may use freon as the refrigerant. Exposure to freon can cause skin tissue to die off permanently, causing necrotic skin lesions. If ingested or inhaled, freon can cause esophageal burns or lung problems.

The Environmental Protection Agency now requires new air conditioning units to use a safer refrigerant because, in addition to posing health risks, freon also depletes the ozone layer. However, even if your system uses a safer refrigerant, a leak will still prevent it from working properly.

High temperatures in summer can be dangerous as well as uncomfortable. For more information about AC repair or replacement, contact Next Level Heating and Air Conditioning at 707-228-9921.
