5 HVAC Contractor Approved Fall Furnace Maintenance Tips

Most homeowners don't give the heating system a second thought unless the weather is cold enough to need it. However, skipping routine furnace maintenance can lead to problems that require an emergency service call from an HVAC contractor. So stay warm and comfortable this winter with the following five maintenance tips.

1. Call Your HVAC Contractor To Schedule an Annual Tune-Up

Some things with your furnace are best left to a professional. An annual tune-up and cleaning are among those things. During a routine service call, your technician may do things like run a system check, clean the furnace, and replace any worn or broken parts. Before you think about taking this on yourself, consider the reasons why only a qualified technician should perform these tasks:

  • Safety — Many furnaces use natural gas, liquid propane, or heating oil for fuel. Unless you are specifically trained to work with these substances, you could quickly find yourself in over your head. It is far safer for an experienced HVAC technician to do routine cleanings.
  • Performance — You may notice more even or quicker heating after getting an annual tune-up.
  • Efficiency — A clean and maintained furnace is usually more efficient than one that is dirty or running with worn-out parts. As a result, you may use less fuel after an annual tune-up.

2. Change the Air Filters

If your furnace works by putting out hot air, there is at least one air filter in the system, which should be changed regularly. Some systems use multiple filters located at intake points, so be sure to find out where yours are and learn how to change them.

Changing your air filters as part of routine furnace maintenance has many benefits. For example, it reduces contamination entering the furnace, which helps extend its life and may mean fewer repairs down the road. It can also help improve the air quality in your home and produce more even heating.

3. Perform a Test Run on the System

Don't wait until it is cold outside to perform a test run on your furnace and heating system. Instead, go ahead and check it out when the weather first starts to get cooler. This will help ensure that any problems can be addressed by an experienced HVAC contractor before the weather demands your furnace be in top shape.

It is simple to test your system for correct operation. First, adjust your thermostat to heat and set the temperature at least a few degrees warmer than the room temperature. It is helpful if you can choose a day when it is chilly enough outside that you'll notice any variations in heat between rooms. Then, if you notice any problems or hear unusual sounds, you can schedule a service call to fix them.

4. Check Your Fuel Supply Levels

If your furnace uses LP or home heating oil, you are likely responsible for ensuring proper fuel supplies. This simple task can help you avoid unnecessary discomfort from running out at an inopportune time. For example, running out of oil during a snowstorm will leave you cold until a delivery truck can reach your home. In addition, most tanks have a level indicator on them, allowing you to take a quick look and see where you stand in a matter of minutes.

5. Clean Air Vents and Heat Registers

In addition to keeping filters clear, you can assist furnace maintenance by cleaning out air vents and registers. Even with filters in place, dust, dirt, and pet hair can build up in these, restricting airflow and increasing the strain on your furnace.

Cleaning registers is relatively simple as long as you can access them. Start by removing any covers and wiping them clean with a damp cloth. Then, use a vacuum to suction any dirt and dust from eh opening. If you are concerned about the ducts, talk to your HVAC contractor about having them professionally cleaned. Finish up by replacing the clean covers.
