4 Signs That Your AC Is Failing

4 Clear Signs You Need a New AC Unit

A broken AC becomes noticeable quickly, especially during the summer months. Regular AC service can help extend the longevity of your unit, but at a certain point, you need to know when it is time for a full AC replacement. The following signs are clear indicators you need a change, and the sooner you make one, the better.

1. Cool or Warm Spots Appear

It is possible you will still get some cold air in the living room, but the bedroom still feels like a sauna. A fully operational AC system should have no problem keeping every area of the home at a consistent temperature. When those discrepancies appear, it is a sign you need a replacement. It is also possible your unit simply requires servicing, but the only way you will know one way or the other is to hire a professional to check out the system.

2. It Is an Older System

If you plan on purchasing an older house, then you need to ask about the age of the AC system. Most older units were designed to last about 10 years, so it is possible you will need to replace it sooner rather than later. Once your AC unit hits the 10-year mark, it is a good idea to consider replacement regardless. You can replace it during the spring or fall when AC service companies are less busy. You will not have to worry about it breaking down in the middle of a heatwave. The best part is that many modern units are designed to last between 15 and 25 years.

3. You Recently Made Additions to the House

Many homeowners increase the square footage of a home by constructing a master suite or game room. This extra space means the current AC unit has to work harder to cool a larger area. When making an addition, it is also a good idea to upgrade the AC system. A larger unit will not be as strained trying to cool down the larger property.

4. You Receive Higher Electric Bills

Everything may appear to be working fine with your AC system. However, when you receive the electric bill at the end of the month, you have to pay substantially more than in the past. You may not realize that your AC continues to run even when your home should have cooled down by now. Many homeowners delay upgrading an AC unit. However, spending the money to upgrade the system now can actually save you money in the long run when you get a more energy efficient piece.
