5 Steps To Stay Cool During a Heat Wave

When summer is around the corner, you should start looking for a HVAC contractor in Sonoma and Marin County. Why? Because summer is the season you AC works the hardest and you want to ensure it’s in top shape for the coming heat wave.

Of course, you should take additional steps to ensure you’re ready for sky-high temperatures. In fact, here are five tips to help you brave the sizzling summer months in comfort.

1. Install Sun Screens

Sunlight can heat up a room quickly, which is why you should install sun screens. These removable screens drastically cut down on the intensity of light that filters through windows, preventing rooms from heating up while allowing you to see outside. As an added bonus, these screens contribute to privacy, as passersby can’t see into your home during daylight hours.

2. Find a HVAC Contractor in Sonoma and Marin County

When was the last time you got AC maintenance? If you haven’t thought about your HVAC system since last August, you may be in trouble with the temperature skyrockets.

Systems are most likely to go out at the height of summer because that’s when they’re working the hardest. However, proper maintenance lets you address any issues before they become serious and can even extend the life of your AC. When your system is in top shape, you can run the air with confidence, knowing your unit can keep up.

3. Stay on Top of the Forecast

While we’re used to the weather gradually getting warmer as we move into the heart of summer, sometimes there are spikes in temperature. These hotter days can be a huge burden on your unit, but you can reduce the strain with a few steps to increase its efficiency:

  • Close blinds when sun directly hits a room
  • Maintain weather stripping to create an airtight seal
  • Change your air filters on a regular basis

4. Keep Outdoor Units Clean

Some areas get intense summer storms that can leave debris across your lawn. If your AC unit is outside, it’s at risk of getting cluttered and clogged.

After storms and on a regular basis thereafter, you should clear away any debris that’s collected on your unit. You should also keep your unit clear of vegetation such as bushes. These plants may experience a burst of growth after a storm, so it’s a good idea to trim them after rain.

5. Keep an Eye Out for Signs of Disrepair

Even with excellent maintenance, there’s a chance your HVAC system may develop issues. Fortunately, most problems can be solved relatively easily if identified right away. As temperatures climb, keep an eye out for the following:

  • Electric bills being significantly higher than last year
  • System continually running or starting again right after shutting off
  • Odors coming from your vents

If you notice any of these signs, contact a professional right away.
